Living amidst the chaotic nature and constraints of a Pandemic has brought Zoom meetings, face masks, and 6-foot social distancing into our everyday lives. For many they have become an essential avenue to basic social networking and direct/indirect interactions with other human beings. Conforming to the de-socialization of public spaces, and translating art traditionally viewed in-person to a virtual viewing format, brings challenges. However here, from the comfort and safety of viewers’ own homes, and through the adaptability which the virtual community provides, we present “A Displaced Wonderland”. Viewers’ familiarity with the on-screen environment might suggest that this voyage is fabricated. On the contrary, it presents the reality of physical travel to remote destinations – experienced in real-time, even if not in “real” space. This project provides evidence that the virtual format can make possible amazing artistic adventures, and the sharing of the resulting ‘travelling’ works, all without leaving home.
Living Studios affiliated artists and visitors will actively participate in directing this artistic adventure – through connecting and interacting virtually with a remote participant, this stranger will become our human ‘GPS’, and will follow the directions given to him/her by the artists at Living Studios and visitors. Thus, as directors of their own guided tour, we can become foreigners in a new fantastical land. Along the way, throughout the Zoom performance we will also be creating visual representations from what we see, hear and experience. Language is not a barrier for this is an intimate collection of thoughts and connections which inspire and facilitate engagement and conversations big or small, among people.
